　Shanghai Association of Engineering Translators (SAET) was founded on 28 December, 1996. Professor Yan Dongsheng, an academician from both the China Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, is the honorary president of the council of our association.
　　
   Registered with Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, the association, a mass organization with legal personality, is currently the only one mass academic body in Shanghai engaged in providing engineering translation service for the construction projects under the direct leadership of Science & Technology Commission of Shanghai. It is a corporate member of the China Association of Translators.

   The association is dedicated to uniting and organizing translators from various engineering fields in the city to carry out academic symposium, information exchange and friendship activities, undertake translation work and provide consultation and services to clients at home and abroad. The association aims at protecting the legal rights and interests of engineering translators, enhancing their due social status, flourishing the translation business in China and enabling them to take an active part in the construction of the socialist society in harmony.

　In accordance with the requirements of the operation and business development, this association has set up the academic committee and specialty subcommittees for English, German, Japanese, French and Russian, secretariat office, translation service department, engineering consultancy department, qualify assurance department, public relationship department, organization and training department, information technology department and “association news” editorial department.

   This association boasts of a large number of talents engaged in the engineering and scientific translation with about 500 members being engineers, scientists or professors from medium or large size enterprises in various industrial sectors, scientific research institutes and universities and colleges. More than 80% of the members have been granted medium or high professional titles and members with the high professional titles account for one third of the total number, with 18 members recognized by the China Association of Translators and awarded with the title of senior translator with prestige.
This association boasts of the capacity to provide translation services in a complete range of languages. More than 50% of the members are English translators with the remaining being German, Japanese, French or Russian translators as well as Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Swedish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Korean, Indian, Indonesian, Malay, Besides, a translation service network consisting of more than 500 translators has been established by the association. Under the guidance provided by consultants committee consisting of the member of the Engineering Academy of China and senior translators with prestige, the association is capable to provide the multi-language translation services to the engineering construction projects at home and abroad.

　The translation services provided by the association cover a wide range of fields. Since the establishment of the association ten years ago, we have translated several hundred millions words of engineering and technical materials in English, German, French, Russian, Japanese into Chinese or vice verse for the medium, large-sized enterprises or Sino-foreign joint venture enterprises, such as Eastern Air Lines, China Aviation Industrial Corporation, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Shanghai Metro Corporation, Shanghai Volkswagen, Shanghai Huizong Automobile Co, Ltd., Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator Co., Ltd,, Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical General Factory, Shanghai Gao Qiao Petrochemical Co., Ltd., Shanghai General Motors, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Belling Microelectronics Co., Ltd., Shanghai Maglev Co. Ltd., Shanghai Electrics Group Co., Ltd., Qin Shan Nuclear Power Station, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., U.S. ARQ Architect’s Office, Siemens and French Alstom Share holding Co., Ltd. In recent years, this association has provided a large quantity of oral translation services to dozens of companies/enterprises in the country and won favorable appraisals from our clients in all walks of life.
Besides the oral and written translation services, this association provides consultancy and services in market survey, technical discussion, investment environment investigation, looking for the cooperative partners, project feasibility study, display of catalogues and samples for the new products and new technologies or cinema/video playing meetings, video recording and mixing, foreign language training, typewriting, duplicating and proofreading.
With the brisk development of the global economic integration and emerging of the service market of the localization of the products made by the multinational companies worldwide, the translation services, being one of the critical skills to eliminate the differences between the regions in language and culture in the process of the product localization service, have become an industrial market with a start up scale. For the grand development of the Western China, acceleration of the socialist economy construction and scientific and technical renovation and promotion of the progress of the internationalization of the products, this association shall cooperate with the large size translation organizations to form a strong strength providing translation services to make our due efforts in the flourishing of the translation career at home and abroad.

Translation services

1. Our concept of devotion to the career
The quality of the translation means the survival, rationality of the price good faith and timely delivery the creditability.

2. Our operating flow chart
Full time personnel have been appointed to take the responsibility with the system of management on three levels carried out, i.e. the secretariat office of the association is responsible for receiving the customers and accepting the order, the translation consultancy department is responsible for the organization and assignment as well as supervision of the progress of the translation production. The quality assurance department subordinate to the academic committee of the association is responsible for the comprehensive supervision of the quality of the translation products. For each order of the translation, a qualified member of the association is to be designated as the head of the translation project.
In order to safeguard the legal rights and interests of the customer and uphold the good will of the association, the QC department of the association has established the quality assurance system. In the first place, the requirements of the customer are to be defined. Then, the appropriate translators involved in the relevant discipline are to be selected with the technical terms for the translation products to be initially determined. And, for each translation product, the senior translators and veteran senior engineers are to do the technical and linguistic proofreading with the technical terms to be uniformed. Finally, the team of experts established by the QC department is to audit the translation products for output the products in compliance with the requirements of the customer. The follow up service is provided to the satisfaction of the customer.

3. Cost of the translation

(1) Foreign language to be translated into Chinese (Unit: RMB/one thousand Chinese words)
a. English/Japanese translated into Chinese: RMB110.00 to 130.00
b. German/French/Russian translated into Chinese: RMB130.00 to 150.00
c. Minority languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Korean into Chinese: RMB300.00 to 500.00

(2) Chinese to be translated into foreign language (Unit: RMB/one thousand Chinese words)
a. Chinese translated into English/Japanese: RMB230.00 to 300.00
b. Chinese translated into German/French/Russian: RMB250.00 to 320.00
c. Chinese translated into Minority languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Korean: RMB500.00 to 800.00

(3) Rush up translation
The cost will be determined in accordance with the difficulty of the task and emergency with 20%, 50% or 100% to be charged additionally.

(4) Reference cost for the oral translation (Unit: RMB per day)

a. English/Japanese translated into Chinese or vice verse: RMB500.00 to 1200.00

b. German/French/Russian translated into Chinese or vice verse: RMB600.00 to 1400.00

c. Minority languages translated Chinese or vice verse: RMB1000.00 to 2000.00

d. In case the account to be settled monthly, normally, it will be around RMB6000.00
to 8000.00 each month or to be negotiated face to face.

   The working time of the interpreters is 8 hours per workday, with two days as the rest days each week. In case the time is more than 8 hours in the workday or the work is to be carried out on the weekend, the overtime charge is to be paid. The customer is to provide the interpreters with the luncheon and supper or light refreshments are to be provided if the interpreter is required to work overtime. If the interpreter is required to work out of Shanghai, the travel expenses and accommodation are to be borne by the customer.
